Our proximity to the city of Boston played an important role in the success of the  manufacturing industry in the northern Berkshires, made possible by the creation of the Hoosac Tunnel in 1875. This four and three quarter miles tunnel allowed for railway transport of manufactured goods from the northern Berkshires, upstate New York and southern Vermont to the urban hub of Boston. The Hoosac Tunnel was a feat of engineering at the time of its completion, and is still one of the longest tunnels in North America. It was ahead of its time, much like the city of Boston, which founded the country’s first public transportation system in 1631. The Red Line Blend represents our rich history in the northern Berkshires carried into the future by forward thinking and big ideas, like the city of Boston and its revolutionary public transportation system.
